Rubbish, Recycling and Oversized Items
Correct use of the garbage rooms – general waste, recycling, and disposal of oversized items
Updated 11 October 2026
Management has been advised that oversized and unwanted items are being left in the garbage room without prior arrangement. This creates a health and safety hazard, blocks access for other residents, and results in additional costs to the Owners Corporation. This page sets out the correct procedure for all residents and occupants.
Red lid = general rubbishBag it securely first.
Yellow lid = recyclingEmpty, clean and dry.
Oversized itemsBook with the Building Manager first. Never leave them in the garbage room.

Where to Take Your Rubbish and RecyclingThe Phoenix is made up of two buildings, and each uses its own system
Building 1Rubbish chute on each floor
Red – general rubbish
- Pack your rubbish well in a tied bag. Bags must not be oversized.
- Put the bag down the rubbish chute on your floor.
- It drops into the large 660 L red bin in the main garbage room on the ground floor.
Yellow – recycling
- Recycling does not go down the chute. Bring it down by hand.
- Go to level P1 (car park).
- Take the car park entrance ramp to the main garbage room and tip your recycling into the yellow-lid bins.
Building 2No rubbish chute – two units per floor
Building 2 has no chute, so all waste is taken down by hand, both red and yellow.
- Go to level P1 (car park).
- Use the smaller bin room next to the Building 2 lift. It serves Building 2 residents only.
- Put general rubbish in the red-lid bins (bagged) and recycling in the yellow-lid bins.
Keep the common areas clean. Make sure no waste or liquid leaks or spills in the hallway, lift, stairs or ramp. If something does, please clean it up straight away. Pack bags and containers securely before you carry them.

Oversized, Bulky or Unwanted ItemsFree City of Sydney collection, arranged through the Building Manager
The garbage rooms and the general waste and recycling bins must not be used for oversized, bulky or unwanted items. This includes (but is not limited to) furniture, mattresses, rugs, whitegoods and appliances, electronic waste, or any item that does not fit inside a bin with the lid fully closed.
Before disposing of any unwanted item, notify the Building Manager so it can be booked in for collection. Do not leave it in or near the garbage room.
By Friday
Book with the Building Manager
Submit the online booking form (or contact the Building Manager) by the Friday before collection. The Building Manager makes the council booking.
Monday
Move your items out
Place them at the road kerbside in front of Building 2 (125 Murray Street, between the tree and the signpost).
Tuesday
Council collects
City of Sydney contractors collect the items. There is no charge.
Monday only, please. Items may be put out on the Monday only, one day ahead of collection. Items left on the kerbside for several days attract illegal dumping from passers-by.
Council collections are booked in three separate item groups (one booking per group per building each week, up to 4 m³ per booking):
- Mattresses and bed bases
- Furniture, rugs and outdoor items
- Metals, whitegoods, electronics and appliances
What the free council service does not take
- Hazardous materials and household chemicals
- Renovation, building or demolition waste
- Mirrors and glass items, including furniture with glass tops
- Carpet, carpet off-cuts and underlay; cement, stone or marble items
- Car parts, tyres and batteries
- Heavy or extra-large items (over 1.5 m long or 100 kg)
- Small items that fit in a bin, and general waste or recycling
These must be arranged privately by the resident, at their own cost.
For reference only: the council’s bulky items pick-up page. Please go through the Building Manager rather than booking yourself, as the council allows only one booking per item group per building each week.

Non-Compliance and Fees
Depositing rubbish, including oversized or unwanted items, on common property without authorisation is a breach of By-law 9 (Depositing Rubbish on Common Property) of the registered Consolidated By-laws AP973729. Owners remain responsible for the compliance of their tenants and invitees under By-law 26.
Items left in or near the garbage room without first notifying the Building Manager bypass the free council collection process, create a safety and access hazard, and require special removal to be arranged directly with the cleaning contractor. Effective immediately, a special handling fee will be charged to the responsible lot in these circumstances.
Your cooperation is appreciated in keeping the garbage rooms safe, tidy and accessible for all residents. If you have any questions, please contact the Building Manager using the details above.
